Hi Huskies it is Mrs. Pimentel your librarian here to talk to you about Black History Month it starts February 1st the first day. I have recently got in some new books either written by notable African-American authors or books that tells an interesting story that reflect African American culture and some that are just fine. I'm going to Spotlight 5 of the books today here with you in this video that you can absolutely send me an email and say hey Mrs. Pimentel I want to check out that book and I can leave it for you at the front desk. The first title that I have is called The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas and I'm going to read for you to some stuff on the inside jacket of the books that you know what it's about. 16 year old how to remove Between Two Worlds the poor black neighborhood where she lives and the fancy Suburban prep school she attends the uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Star Witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of police officer Khalil was unarmed soon afterwards Khalil stuff is a national headline summer calling him a thug maybe even a drug dealer and a gang banger Stars best friend at school suggests he may have had it come when it becomes clear the police have little interest in investigating the incident protester takes to the streets and stars neighborhood becomes a war zone whatever one wants to know is what really went down that night and the only person alive who answer that it's star but what star does or does not stay could destroy her community it could also endanger her life this is a story of addresses issues of racism and police violence it's intelligent gets Hartfield and it's honest so they hate you give by Angie Thomas the next can I have in mind for you guys is called a new kid by Jerry craft and new kid is about a middle schooler 7th grader Jordan Banks love nothing more drawing cartoons about his life but instead of sending him to the art school of his dreams his parents enroll him in a prestigious private school known for the academics where Jordan turns out to be one of the few kids of color is in his entire grade as he makes the daily trip from his Washington Heights Apartments to the upscale river Riverdale Academy Day School Jordan soon finds himself Torn Between Two Worlds and not really fitting into either one middle school is hard enough without the all the unspoken rules and expectations that come with being the new kid can Jordan learn to navigate his new school culture while keeping his neighborhood friends and staying true to himself it seems like a really good one too another book I have for you is called One Crazy Summer by Rita williams-garcia yes this one when I read the inside jacket for it it seems as though it's going to be really funny kind of comical and there's some Grandma comedy in here family interaction comedy and a journey about getting to know yourself and your family as well but it's that during one of the most tumultuous years in American history One Crazy Summer is the heartwarming funny tale of three girls who travel to Oakland California in search of the mother who abandoned them it's an unforgettable story told by a distinguished author of books for children for children and teens at powerful and affecting story of Sisterhood so this seems like he really really good story. One Crazy Summer again another story called clean getaway by Nick Stone how to go on an unexplained road trip with your Grandma grab a suitcase prepac from the big spring break trip that got canceled we all know all about things being canceled right now don't we leave a note for Dad who still going to worry and be mad because you're grounded fasten your seatbelt Grandma's anything but unconventional but conventional so this trip won't be either use the green book Grandma's most treasured possession it holds history memories are most important the way home for the life of him William scoob scoob at the nickname Lamarque stay out of trouble and now the run in that school have led to lockdown at home I'm guessing that's why he's grounded he's having trouble at school so when Grandma Scoops favorite person on the earth ask him to go on an impromptu road trip he's in the RV faster than he can save freedom old maps in a strange pamphlet called The Travelers green book at their side De Pere take off on a journey down Gmod Memory Lane but Adventure quickly turns to uncertain Gmod keeps changing the license plate dodging skip questions and refusing to check Dad's voicemail and the farther they go the more scoop realizes that the world hasn't always been a welcome in place for kids like him and things aren't always what they seem Jima included patina by Jason Reynolds this is a 3 series Buck I'm going to go ahead and read me the synopsis for the first in the series and then if it interests you you guys can always check out two and three of the series so patina Patty Jones is the fastest The Defenders track team make sense she's got a lot to run for the kids at the fancy new school she's now he sent two to show the ones who talked her but she's going to be someone someday for her fellow Defenders movies ghost sunny and Lou to make them proud she runs for her little sister Maddy who relies on Patty to show her how to brave and strong and she runs for her mother who can never run again like Mom says Patty Ain't No Junk and she's out to prove it but when the pressure becomes too much can see out distance it it's a series about a track star who is fast and fiery and has a lot to prove Copa Tina's number one is number two ghosts is number three just in case any of you have already read any number in this series you can ask for either one I just wanted to say that I hope that you all are doing well I hope that you're enjoying going to school at home every day or at least trying to and if you have any questions for me or would like to see no check out some books give me an email and I'll make sure to respond to you as soon as possible and get those books ready for you to pick up and you guys have a great weekend
